Bournville College

System: Outsulation
Finish: PMRB
Texture: Sandpebble
Sector: Education

The brand new £66 million Bournville College campus in Birmingham was designed by international architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, and built by national contractor Shepherd Construction for developer St Modwen. The new 250,000 sq ft building and 4.2 acre campus has capacity for 15,000 students and has been designed as an assertive building to redefine the image of the College, maximise the potential of the landmark site and, as the first part of a wider masterplan and ensure the campus is a bold catalyst in the redevelopment and regeneration of the wider Longbridge area.

Dryvit worked closely with the Architect, Broadway Maylan, and the Design Team from Shepherd Construction Western Division to ensure the building maximized its potential as an architecturally prominent landmark. Dryvit's Outsulation external wall insulation (EWI) system was selected with the PMRB Sandpebble Texture finish in a bespoke Bourneville Blue Colour. This system also satisfied the thermal performance required for the project of .20W/m2K.

As the Dryvit Outsulation insulated render system with its expanded polystyrene (EPS) held the relevant BR 135 classification and LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) certification relevant for a steel frame and solid substrate it was well placed to meet the client St Modwen requirements for insurer approval. With the building height in excess of 18 meters it is classified by Building Control as a high rise building and therefore the chosen cladding system had to satisfy their stringent requirements for fire performance.
