North East Fire & Rescue Authority - Fire Stations

The North East Fire & Rescue Authority (NEFRA) embarked on a £27M PFI project to procure five new build and redeveloped fire stations across the region. The stations were a mix of solid wall and lightweight steel frame construction incorporating Dryvit Oustulation external wall insulation in conjunction with rainscreen cladding panels.

Dryvit worked closely with the Napper Architects, and the Design Team from Shepherd Construction to ensure the most suitable cladding specification was found to meet the requirements set out by both Building Control and the Client. As the Dryvit Outsulation system with its expanded polystyrene (EPS) core holds BR 135 classification and LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) certification for both solid and steel frame substrates it satisfied all requirements with ultimate piece of mind on fire performance as well the design intent in terms of thermal performance, aesthetics and cost – making it the most suitable option for the works. A total of 7,500m2 of the Outsulation insulated render system installed. Completed 2011.

NEFRA were the biggest winners at the 2011 Partnership Bulletin Awards securing the ‘Best Accommodation’ category before going on to win the “Grand Prix” award. In a unanimous decision by the judges NEFRA topped a strong shortlist of international projects to win the ‘Grand Prix’ award, for delivering outstanding improvement in public service for the benefit of communities.

Designed by Andrew Wallace Architects and built by Short Construction this contemporary new build residential dwelling had the outline brief to create a high quality building that was not only striking in appearance but met the clients requirements for a comfortable and practical family home. Conceptually the building is made up of three distinct parts, each with its own associated materials utilised to reinforce the overall concept. The Dryvit Drysulation External Wall Insulation (EWI) system was specified as it was seen as the ideal choice to accentuate the light box concept for the accommodation section of the property.

300 m2 of Dryvit's Drysulation insulated render system was installed directly onto the steel support structure. The system not only allowed the architect a wide degree of design flexibility but also provided a cost effective wall cladding that easily met the target U value for the project. Differing thicknesses of insulation were used to create a banding effect for the façade. The architect specified the Dryvit HDP finish in Sandpebble Fine texture as he was aware that with its inherent hydrophobic properties the finish coat would repel water, lessening the long term effects of dirt build up on the façade, which greatly reduces the need for maintenance for the client.

Potterrow Student Accommodation

Designed by LDN Architects and built by Ogilvie Construction the Potterow Student Accommodation project in Edinburgh is conveniently placed to serve the Edinburgh University student community with this new 146 bedroom facility. This development also provides a contemporary state of the art rehearsal space for Edinburgh Festival Theatre that will allow the Theatre to provide fully serviced rehearsal space on their current site. As the site is located on the border of the Old Town and Southside Conservation Areas of the City and within the World Heritage Site a number of restrictive massing, material and space planning issues had to be addressed.

1,500 m2 of Dryvit's Outsulation external wall insulation (EWI) system was installed directly onto a substrate constructed of concrete panels. As the building was in excess of 18 metres in height Dryvit's comprehensive BR135 and Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) fire approvals were instrumental in satisfying both building control and insurer requirements for the project, which allowed the cost effective expanded polystyrene (EPS) based Outsulation insulated render system to be specified for use on the scheme.

Media City - Manchester

Dryvit's pre-fabricted Fedderlite external wall insulation (EWI) panels provided a practical fast track solution at the new Media City, Salford Quays. It was suggested by Lend Lease that Fairhurst Architects should consider the innovative Fedderlite pre-fabricated EWI as an alternative to the in-situ cladding system originally specified on the 22 storey buildings at the heart of Media City. The Fedderlite insulated render panels were manufactured off site in a controlled environment enabling the installation to meet tight programme requirements during the harsh winter months in an exposed environment. PMRB finish in Sandblast texture was selected to emulate a stone effect.  As the buildings were over 18m Dryvit's BR 135 fire classification for Fedderlite EWI was instrumental in satisfying building control requirements and securing the specification. Area: 7000 sq meters.

The Bloc, Watermill Lane, North London

The Bloc is and an urban regeneration scheme to house key workers in North London. The £25m urban regeneration residential scheme was designed by PCKO Architects for Origin Housing Ltd close to the North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton, North London. The scheme provides 221 units, incorporating 128 units for key workers/intermediate rent, 65 social rented units and 28 shared ownership units, as well as a local office for Origin Housing Ltd.

The project was completed in three phases and incoprorates 7000m2 of Dryvit Outsulation Rail external wall insulation (EWI) system on lightweight steel frame and 2500m2 of Dryvit Outsulation EWI on concrete. The insulated render systems were specified to achieve the demanding u-value wall performance and Dryvit's Sandpebble Fine finish was selected to blend with other cladding materials to create the desired aesthetics for the scheme. As parts of the build were over 18 metres, Dryvit's comprehensive LPCB and BR135 fire certification was key to the specification of the Outsulation Rail and Outsulation EWI systems on the scheme.
